Fish Diseases You Have to Be Aware Of Print E-mail

Having a fish for a pet is common for those who have little space which will not accommodate pets like the usual dogs and cats. A fish tank will not take up space thus allowing a person to have a pet that will bring him joy and relaxation despite the lack of space.

Usually, it is ornamental fish that adorns many aquariums today, although beautiful seawater aquariums have been on the rise in the past few years. Taking care of a fish is not as easy as you might think it is, especially with the ornamental ones. This type of fish needs extra care and special attention for it to thrive in the aquarium environment. Some of the factors that you have to consider when taking care of this pet is the adequate supply of oxygen, clean water, sufficient space for them to move around, and a balanced meal.

Sometimes, even with maintenance and care, diseases can also strike your pet.  These diseases can be attributed to a genetic disorder or due to an infection. Whatever the reason is for your pet’s disease, you must always be ready to give remedy because disease in the aquarium can easily spread which can cause the other inhabitants of the aquarium to perish.

You have to be aware of the fact that the living environment of your fish has with it other living organisms such as bacteria and viruses which attack at the very first sign of weakness in the system.  Although responsibility is to be put upon these organisms for causing disease, blaming them is the least you can do since it is their method of surviving.

Fishes also have different symptoms when they are stricken with disease.  Your pet may manifest less appetite, move unusually, or lose its colors when it feels something wrong with its body. These are the most common symptoms of a disease-stricken pet. But there is one distinct manifestation wherein you can clearly tell if your pet is sick and this is the degradation of its fins and tails. This degradation is often called as tail and fin rot and is the most common sign of fish disease.

Degradation of the fish’s fins and tails brings with it long term destruction since it affects the mobility of your pet. Simply put, a fish that does not move dies. But when this happens, the pet owner usually asks who is to blame for the said death.  The answer lies in the way the pet’s environment is maintained. A very bad mistake that most pet owners commit is to assume that everything is okay when the water in the aquarium is clear. However, this is usually not the case since chemical imbalances in the water can occur without having it change in color.

If your pet is suffering from tail and fin rot, the only remedy is to change the aquarium’s water immediately and feed your pet with a balanced diet.  It is also required that you separate healthy ones from disease-stricken ones to avoid further spreading of the disease. And as the cliché goes, prevention is better than cure so you better maintain your aquarium before anything goes wrong.
