If you want something new for a pet aside from the typical domesticated animals such as cats and dogs, you might as well try a rabbit. It makes a fine house pet. It can be trained to use the litter box for more ease in caring for it. When bought as a pet, it can mingle with you; display affection, be submissive, quiet, and very interesting. But the choice should not be done impulsively. Take time to learn some of the main considerations to focus on before getting one for a pet.
Handling the pet. Although it can be really cute, it often resists to be picked up especially when it feels a bit threatened. If mishandled, it can scratch, bite, kick, or become afraid of you. In its attempt to escape from your grasp, it can cause injuries to itself. So if you have little children, a rabbit is not going to be advisable because they are generally fond of cuddling a pet.
The destruction that it can cause. This animal is basically a chewer. It isn’t like a dog which can be trained on which things to chew. It can literally chew on chords, electrical wires, books, and furniture. So, you must “rabbit proof” the things which it may possibly chew on. Also, it would help if you provide your pet some toys to chew on to divert its attention.
The probability of territorial marking. Your pet needs to become neutered to avoid the so-called territorial marking. It would then become easier to train in the use of the litter box.
Giving of food. By nature, this animal is an herbivore. Give it fresh pellets, hay, and fresh vegetables.
Keeping watch of its health. The house rabbit needs a regular health check up with a trusted veterinarian. Some of the diseases that you should be keen of include foot problems, overgrown teeth, respiratory and digestive problems, to name a few.
The need for exercise. Like any other animal, a rabbit requires exercise. It should be allowed to run around to burn energy. That is why it is only necessary that a cage is provided for it.
Be committed to raising your pet. Its cage needs to be cleaned, it has to be provided with clean water, and its diet has to be cared for. Food should also be readily available and be fed to the rabbit twice in a day. It needs your affection, proper grooming, mental and social stimulation.
The animal has its own personality. Before choosing any particular breed of rabbit, you need ample time to research about it.
You would need a capital to use. Of course taking care of a rabbit requires money to keep up with the expenses. You would need to buy a cage, attend to its medical checkup, food, bedding, grooming, and many others. Among the essentials of a rabbit include the litter box, cage, nest box, fenced area, chew toys, flea preventives, grooming items, and food items.
A pet rabbit can be obtained from a hobbyist, a breeder, or from the numerous pet shops. It only follows that you make sure that your family is ready to welcome such animal into your home along with the responsibilities that you all have to share. |
