Birds are popular pets among the population because of the relative ease in its maintenance. Also, birds make very great pets and can serve as eye candies since different types come in various colors. Different species also have different capabilities like singing birds and talking birds. If you plan to have a bird as a pet, you must put in a considerable amount of effort into checking beforehand the things you are to face when you care for an avian friend.
First consideration you have to make is the choice of which type of bird to breed in captivity. Popular birds that are great as pets include canaries, cockatiels, finches and parakeets since they are generally well-behaved.
Since you will be keeping the bird in captivity, you have to make sure that its living accommodation is fit for it. The cage of your bird should be safe and secure. It also must be large enough so that your pet can extend its wings. Depending on a particular type of bird, some will need room to fly while others will need room to climb. The cage’s bottom should also be lined with hard wood shaving.
Birds are very sensitive to noise and smoke, therefore, the cage must be placed in a quiet room that is away from direct sunlight. The cage must also be placed at eye level so that you can comfortably monitor your pet. If other pets such as dogs and cats live indoors with you, keeping the cage at a safe distance must also be done.
Because having a bird will require them to be held captive, you must provide toys for your pet to occupy himself and keep him active. Mirrors also attract birds since they have the tendency to enjoy talking to their reflection. Perches must also be placed in the bird’s cages so that your pet can jump from one perch to another for exercise. A cuttlebone should likewise be provided to give your bird something to pick at.
Adequate and well-balanced food as well as a clean supply of water must be available at all times in your bird’s cage. This is to ensure that your pet is kept healthy. Cleaning your pet’s cage and his toys must be done once a week since droppings can make the living environment of your pet dirty and more susceptible to germs.
It is also advisable to take your bird out at least once a day. You can also try to have the bird socialize and get used to humans. When you let your pet out, you must see to it that its wings are clipped lest you see your pet flying away to freedom.
As a pet owner, you also have to be sensitive to your bird’s condition. If you see your pet having discharge around the eyes and nose and exhibit dull feathers, then it is probably time to see a veterinarian for medication because most likely your pet is sick.
Birds are just like any other pets. They are there to serve as our stress reliever and will exhibit comical antics, which is why taking care of them should be done the best way possible. |
