Housebound pets are rarely taken out for a simple walk or jog. Trips to their food bowls are their form of exercise. However, this should not be so. Regular exercise is tantamount to optimal health. So, what are you waiting for? Exercise with your pet and you’ll be exercising too. What are the benefits of exercise? Sustained, vigorous use of the muscles will stimulate all tissues and increase blood circulation. Blood vessels will dilate and blood pressure rises. The rise in body temperature causes an increase in sweating and blood flow to the skin. Oxygen is circulated to the whole body producing sweat that helps remove toxins. You and your pet’s digestive system will secrete fluids better and the bowels move more easily. Join your pet in jogging, walking, playing on the beach or chasing sticks. Half an hour daily routine of exercise will greatly benefit your pet. In cases of older pets, you can settle for slow walks around the block. For a pet cat, his idea of exercise is ‘scratching’. Scratching by using his claws to knead and stretch, will benefit the muscles of his forelegs, backbone and shoulders. If unable to do so, he’s likely to grow weaker and become prone to illness and degeneration. One important aspect when playing with your pet is to avoid using your bare hand as the ‘bait’ or the object of teasing. This will inform him that it’s alright to bite or scratch your hand. You don’t want this happening because you are not instilling in him discipline. A pet dog who is suffering from a sore foot or a partial paralysis is encouraged to swim in a bathtub, large trough, swimming pool or a natural body of water for his exercise. Swimming also strengthens muscles in the same way running does. If he tends to sink, you can place a towel or a cloth around his body like a sling. The sling will act as body support. If your pet dog has a back problem, this could be a good exercise for him. Just like you, your pet also needs a fitness regimen to keep him on a path to good health. It is up to you to set the routine. If you feel that your pet has any physical limitations, consult your veterinarian before beginning any exercise routine. Pets who exercise regularly like their owners tend to act out problem behaviors less frequently. Your beloved pet will acquire social skills by interacting with you on a regular basis. The bond between you and him will be strengthened creating a happy and fulfilling relationship at home. A healthy pet plus a healthy owner equals a healthy life .Another factor for your pet’s ability to exercise is a balanced diet. A hardworking pet may need more nutrients than one who wants to lose weight. Always check with your vet to find the diet that is right for your pet and his activity level.
